Latinized form of Greek
Ευσταθιος (Eustathios), derived from the Greek word
ευσταθης (eustathes) meaning "well-built, stable". It is ultimately from
ευ (eu) "good" and
‘ιστημι (histemi) "to stand, to set up". This was the name of a few early saints, including the 2nd-century martyr also known as
Eustachius (see
Eustace).
