From the Germanic name Audovacar meaning "wealthy and vigilant", derived from the elementsaud "wealth" and wacar "vigilant". Odovacar, also called Odoacer, was a 5th-century Gothic leader who overthrew the last Western Roman emperor and became the first barbarian king of Italy.
