Latinized form of the Greek name
Θεμιστοκλης (Themistokles) meaning "glory of the law", from
θεμις (themis) "law of nature, divine law" (genitive
θεμιστος) and
κλεος (kleos) "glory". This was the name of an Athenian statesman and general who was victorious over the Persians in the Battle of Salamis.
