Latinized form of the Greek name
Θεοφιλος (Theophilos) which meant "friend of god", derived from
θεος (theos) "god" and
φιλος (philos) "friend". In the
New Testament the evangelist Luke addresses his gospel and the Book of Acts to a man named Theophilus.
